There’s exciting news in the pizza world! Starting January 26th, select Pizza Hut locations across the United States will be offering certified Gluten-Free pizzas!!
Pizza Hut has partnered with Udi’s Gluten-Free to offer cheese-only and pepperoni gluten-free pizzas prepared with procedures that are certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG). They’ve implemented some extraordinary measures to reduce the risk of contact with other ingredients that contain gluten. Udi’s Gluten-Free certified crust is stored in separate containers on a dedicated gluten-free shelf in the refrigerator. Every Gluten-Free pizza is baked fresh-to-order on parchment paper, and staff will be required to wear gloves and use dedicated gluten-free pizza cutters. Udi’s crust contains eggs and the pizzas are topped with dairy, but are otherwise free of the other top allergens. There is a make your own option using the gluten-free pizza kit, but since the additional toppings will be kept in an area that is not fully gluten-free, there are cross-contact risks.
Congratulations Pizza Hut! It’s such a bold move for a quick service restaurant to provide certified allergy-friendly menu offerings. Hopefully more restaurants and quick service food providers will follow suit and offer more menu items free from the top allergens, and more importantly, be accountable for cross-contamination in their preparation practices. Here’s hoping that this can be the start of an allergy-friendly trend in the quick service restaurant world.
